There are more theatres and galleries in Munich than anywhere else in Germany, as well as two outstanding orchestras, the Bayerischer Ballett, and one of the world's great opera companies, based in the monumental neoclassical Nationaltheater. Galleries worth a visit include Lenbachhaus, the former home of successful portrait painter Franz von Lenbach, and the palace and gardens at Schloss Nymphenburg, 6km from the city centre (15mins on the number 17 tram). Admire architect Francois Cuvilliés' rococo architecture at the pavilions and lodges in the Nymphenburg gardens and also in town at The Residenz, the sprawling faux-Renaissance palace where the Bavarian royal family lived, now a museum, and the Altes Residenztheater. There are also museums to cater for just about all tastes. Then, of course, there are the beer gardens.

Situated in the heart of Munich’s old town, Cortiina Hotel is the result of one of the Bavarian capital’s most inspired partnerships—that of gastronome Rudi Kull and architect Albert Weinzierl. With its feng shui-inspired ambience, Cortiina exemplifies Kull and Weinzierl's shared philosophy, synthesizing sophisticated design, impeccable service, and a deep relationship with the local creative scene. Even the hotel’s name was modified to express harmonious balance. Encompassing 75 rooms, the Cortiina's aesthetic exudes relaxed elegance and soothing minimalism. Regional materials such as stone pine, bronze, linen, and bog oak coalesce in each guestroom's harmonious arrangement, underscored by warm, mood-enhancing hues of deep crimsons and rich earth tones. The golden glow of the classic Grapes Weinbar, meanwhile, invites guests to partake in Munich's well-heeled social scene late into the night. Here, connoisseurs will discover rare vintages and surprises from all over the world.
